The Prineville to Lakeview road covers vast distances across South Central Oregon, and was an important transportation route for many decades. Pictured here is just a small section of it at Picture Rock Pass, located between Silver Lake and Summer Lake. This is also an important site for ancient history, as the area is also home to a number of Indian petroglyphs. The remains of the pioneer road are easily seen and can be followed for some distance. Huge boulders and other rocks thrown to the side make way for the vintage route. This is an amazingly beautiful and serene area, the landscape dominated by rimrock and other geologic faulting unlike anywhere else. Even today, this is remote country with few people and it remains mostly untouched.
